![]() The flavors were just incredibly unbalanced. It though was so terribly acidic and salty that it did not taste right. ![]() The second course was shrimp ceviche that was also an item we could have ordered from one of the restaurants. It was plated beautifully, but it was a set of food items that we could easily go to one of the restaurants on the resort and request it from the menu and get it so it didn’t feel very special. The first course was basically guac/black beans and some other dip with chips. From what we were told, this would be a seven course meal. With regards to the chefs table, it was super disappointing. We had even scheduled to do the Chef’s table paired with wine but the smell of the food was just not allowing our stomachs to settle down. Even the mashed potatoes had the off smell/flavor. We attempted to order room service a few times just trying to find food that didn’t have the off smell/taste and we learned we could have toast. We could not for the life of us figure out what was causing the food to have this strange off flavor/smell to it. When the food arrived most of it had this strange chemical smell like hiding in the food. ![]() At this point we were both super hungry so we figured we would try room service. As soon as we got close enough to the grilling station we both got super nauseous. While we walked around reorienting ourselves to the resort grounds we were smelling the food and there was something about it that was upsetting both my husband’s and my stomach. We had no idea this was taking place in place of the regular restaurant schedule so it kind of threw our dining plan for a loop. We were also super excited about the restaurants but when we arrived there was some event that they had put together that had 2 of the restaurants closed in order to cater/cook for the event. Before the store that was there had a beautiful assortment of clearly one of a kind pieces with a bunch of natural stones that were mined in MX or somewhere in Central/South America. Mainly manufactured/lab created stones and the few “real” diamond jewelry they had was so sadly overpriced that the whole thing was a bust. The jewelry shop in particular was super disappointing. The grounds were beautiful as they were previously but the shops that replaced the old shops aren’t very good. At home we sleep with the AC set to 60 degrees, so our room felt a bit warm at night for sleeping. One additional irritation was the inability to change the thermostat. We definitely wouldn’t have been able to drink the whole thing over the course of the 5 days we were there. Honestly, we didn’t know what to do with it and we had no idea if we would be allowed into the airport with it, so we didn’t even bother opening it and left it in our room. Now, they have you fill out a form and receive one large bottle of your chosen liquor to be brought to your room. Because we were in the preferred club we thought we would have the small bottles of liquor in our room, but that changed as well. When you tried to dispense paper it just flipped and dropped the roll on the floor. The toilet didn’t flush well and the paper toilet dispenser barely held itself up. Our room had the same furnishings and decor as previous, but honestly you could just see the wear and tear of the years of use and lack of updating. Check in took a minute since it was so busy, so it took them a while to get us through the process this time. Normally at this point, we would have been greeted with a glass of champagne but that wasn’t the case this time. It was super busy and exceptionally loud. We were proffered club and went to the lounge to get checked in. ![]() We arrived at the resort and checkin was not as smooth as our previous check in’s had been. Obviously we had previously really enjoyed our stays at Secrets Akumal, but this time was a total different experience in a bad way. This was our fourth trip to this particular resort and it was the first time that we had gone after the resort was purchased by Hyatt.
